I came to the Czech Republic over a year and a half ago to live here with my lovely wife. Two days after our big move I started a full time TEFL course to get the certificate and to be able to become a professional teacher.
I was full of excitement and enjoyed the busy days in Prague, travelling in and out and exploring my new home and countryside that was all completely new to me.
I was chuffed when I received my pass grade and became certified. Immediately I set up interviews with Prague language schools and was hired by a few very renowned ones. I was happy to have this opportunity and excited to start my promised full time schedule. The beginning was a bit slow having only a few classes from my schools signed up but I was assured to have more in future.
Time passed and I wasn´t sure I was working to my full potential, I had always a few hours off between my classes and I was feeling insecure.
I started advertising for private students and got a few. I was feeling contented again and motivated. I believed that I was doing great things, I help people become better, helped them achieve more in their lives and I felt responsible for them personally as they are my students and as their teacher I do have that kind of responsibility.
I became close to some of my students, some of them became my friends. Some students dropped for various reasons and some just attend classes every now and then.
I realised this is what my teaching is going to be like. I will have students that will learn with enthusiasm and some that are not so keen on learning regularly. I will always have a bit more time on my hands than I would like and I came to a truce with the fact.
However, I do not give up, I still do what I do and I am still on a lookout for new students. I love what I do and it makes me happy to see the progress on those who let me be in charge of their language skills. I am always excited about meeting new people and maybe make new friends in a country that is still a little bit foreign to me.
